UCSD San Diego Seismic Outreach Project
The shaking will begin March 19th! In a new joint program with the UCSD chapter of the Society of Civil and Structural Engineers, over 1,100 5th & 6th grade students from Escondido and Del Mar schools will be visiting Englekirk Structural Engineering Center to test buildings designed and built using K'NEX pieces., on the world's largest outdoor shake-table. Students will balance the roles of, architect, engineer and contactor as a design-build team, and learn about earthquakes and earthquake engineering. Teams will construct a structure, with the KNEX materials provided, that can withstand the simulated seismic activity of the shake-table. Building calculations and scaled drawings will accompany the structure. A team of judges, will evaluate the K'NEX buildings based on aesthetics, best performing on the shake-table and affordability.
